Elusion_Story of a smuggler
ELUSION appears as an artistic book to the project “Many dots still don’t make a line” (“Viele Punkte ergeben noch keine Linie”), which took place in the towns of Wernstein (Upper Austria) and Neuburg am Inn (Lower Bavaria, Germany) from 2015 to 2017.
On the one hand, this book tells the story of how the exhibition project on the theme of “smuggling” as an artistic strategy came into being; on the other hand, it describes in four chapters: Biography, Ornament & Emptiness, Smuggling, and Transculturality & Nomadism – the four main areas of focus that Alice Dittmar has given her work over the last eight years. Numerous illustrations provide cross-references to her art or have been taken from the artist’s own photo archive.
Each chapter is assigned its own motif/ emblem. The text is a montage: the original text was broken down according to content overlaps and, in many cases, distributed over more than one chapter. To avoid having to repeat the text over and over again, only the beginning of the sentence is quoted, with the rest being replaced by one of the four chapter emblems. The latter are found throughout the book and form their own repetitive structure (ornament) within the catalogue, visually guiding the reader through it: in this way, the artistic approach of interweaving is visualized.
